Pilates at Rapid Rehab

PILATES

The Pilates method is much more than a series of 500 controlled, smooth, fluid exercises that blend strength, balance, coordination and flexibility into movement. Pilates-based exercises enable you to develop muscle strength and endurance in supported positions using light to moderate spring resistance without activating the pain cycle that can result when the muscle is fatigued. The exercises are taught at a slow to moderate pace, focusing on form that is essential for muscular reeducation. We at Rapid Rehab focus on individual attention to make sure that form is emphasized at your pace. Regardless of your level of fitness, Pilates can be beneficial to you. Whether you are just starting an exercise program or are a well-trained athlete, Pilates can provide a challenging workout customized to your individual needs. Working the body and mind as an integrated whole enables you to create the most balanced body imaginable. Just after a few weeks, the way you look, move, feel, and carry yourself will amaze you.

Pilates can be done either on a mat or on a special apparatus called a Reformer, which enhances the exercise method. Other equipment used includes the Trapeze Table, Wunda Chair, Ladder Barrel, and a host of many other smaller toys used to help strengthen various muscles.

PRE/POST NATAL PILATES

Pilates is an excellent way to strengthen core muscles before and after pregnancy as it helps you regain abdominal tone and aids in a quicker delivery and recovery time. Pilates exercise will give the needed strength and support to the lumbar and pelvic area. While the baby is developing and growing, it stretches and pulls the body out of its proper alignment, causing back pain. The deep hip flexor muscles called the psoas and the lateral trunk flexors called the quadratus lumborum become tight and the ligaments become loose. This is due to a hormone called relaxin that is released into your system causing instability in your joints. Pilates safely stretches and strengthens the weak muscles after pregnancy to help realign the spine. Moreover, proper breathing techniques encourage relaxation and an easier delivery.

GOLFER PILATES

Of all the professional athletes doing Pilates, golfers have adapted to it the fastest. Pilates focuses on movement from the center of the body, or core musculature.

Golfers can:

  • Gain balance to hit farther, straighter and more accurately
  • Increase flexibility, allowing broader range of motion in their swing
  • Reshape their body with long, lean, sleek muscles
  • Build stability in the pelvis

Pilates devotees include Tiger Woods, David Duval, Annika Sorenstem, Kelli Kuehne, and Rocco Mediat among others.
